The Arts are at the centre of Kingsmead’s ethos and values in developing the whole person and unlocking every student’s natural talents. We believe in giving every student ample opportunity to perform and to develop their creative gifts, in turn developing communication, presence, confidence and self-expression.
In Year 7, students will study Drama, Music, Art and Technology throughout the year as standalone curriculum subjects.
However, we also believe in developing the skills and creativity that these subjects promote within enriching, project based learning.
In year 7 and year 8, students will have an additional two hours on their timetable dedicated to ‘The Arts Project’, an enrichment based environment, aimed at developing Innovation and a love for the arts. They will rotate between each arts subject every half term. For example, they will have a half term of Drama enrichment, followed by half a term of Music, half a term of Art and half a term of Technology. This will give them a minimum of an additional six hours contact time with each subject (Remember, this is in addition to the regular curriculum lessons they receive for each subject).
Near the end of the school year, ‘The Arts Project’ timetable collapses and all of Year 7/ Year 8 will join forces to create an end of year ‘Year 7 Showcase’/ Year 8 Showcase! This is where students will combine their skills learnt over the academic year and will rehearse and prepare drama and musical performances, showcase Artwork, bake refreshments and create scenery for the Performances etc. It will be an evening of celebrating the Arts, giving every Year 7 student the opportunity to perform to an audience!
Whether your child has had minimal experience in the Arts or has a natural talent: on the stage, with an instrument or with a paintbrush, Kingsmead is committed to nurturing and developing these skills in all of our students, providing opportunities to excel and shine!
As their Kingsmead journey continues, students are able to study all of the Arts (Drama, Music, Art and Technology) at both GCSE and A Level, as well as being able to get involved in our acclaimed Extra Curricular activities: the annual School Production, KS3 Drama Club, Vocal Group, Orchestra, Art Club and many more!
