Biology (OCR A-Level)
Welcome to the A-Level Biology page!
Biology is everywhere... It is the study of living organisms, life on Earth, why it exists, how it exists and how it all works from the smallest molecule to the largest organisms known to exist. You’ll study a wide range of biological fields including some things you’ve already come across like the heart and lungs, but also how your brain works and how you even have thoughts. Biology is everything from anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, ecology, evolution all the way to genetics. You’ll do dissections, breed fruit flies, do DNA fingerprinting and genetically engineer E.Coli to glow in the dark!
Our Biologists will be assessed through 3 exams at the end of Year 13 for which are results far exceed the national average! These exams are Biological Processes (2hr 15), Biological Diversity (2h 15) and Unified Biology (1hr 30). It’s not all exams though... you will also be assessed on your practical skills separately by completing and passing 12 different types of biological practical.
Success in Biology is such a powerful thing to have on your university application or CV. It can take you down so many different paths we would struggle to fit them on this page, so instead we’ll tell you about what the Kingsmead Biologists have chosen to study so far. We’ve prepared students to study Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Biomedical sciences, pure Biology and Law in recent years. We have got students at university in Canada this year, some at St. Andrews, Oxford, Cambridge, Liverpool and more locally at Keele.
With an A Level in Biology the world is your oyster.
