Geography (AQA A-Level)

Welcome to Key Stage 5 Geography!

Geography is not only up-to-date and relevant, it is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today. So many of the world's current problems boil down to Geography and need the Geographers of the future to help us understand them. As Michael Palin famously said… “Geography is everywhere and allows you to understand the world in which you live”.

During the course, students will study a range of interesting topics and theories. This will include:

* Physical Geography: Tectonics Ecosystems under stress Coasts Deserts Water and Carbon Cycle

* Human Geography: Changing Places Global Governance Population & Environment

* NEA: Independent research project 4000 words

Lesson are built around the following approaches: independent learning, theory and discussion.

Every lesson will involve discovering and understanding content, being able to explain, discuss and analyse it and then apply the new learned knowledge through questions and extend writing tasks alongside interpreting maps and diagrams.

Paper 1 Physical World consists of 3 units totalling 120 marks. The paper is 2 hours and 30 minutes long and worth a total of 40% of the final grade.

Paper 2 Human World consists of 3 units totalling 120 marks. This paper is also 2 hours and 30 minutes long and worth 40% of the final grade.

The Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) is 4,000 words, worth 60 marks and 20% of the final grade.

According to the Royal Geographical Society, Geography graduates have some of the highest rates of graduate employment.

Geography is great for any kind of career that involves the environment, planning, or collecting and interpreting data. Popular careers for people with geography qualifications include: town or transport planning, surveying, conservation, sustainability, waste and water management, environmental planning, tourism, and weather forecasting.
