Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

What is the EPQ

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) gives you the opportunity to take ownership of your own learning by researching a topic that interests you and is not covered by your other Level 3 qualifications. You will choose your project, plan and manage your research, and make key decisions about how you develop and present your work.

You can produce an extended written report based on your research or, where appropriate, create an artefact or production alongside a supporting written report. The project provides the opportunity to explore a subject in greater depth while developing the skills needed to work independently and manage a substantial piece of research.

Completing an EPQ develops valuable research, critical thinking, organisation, project management and communication skills. You will learn to evaluate sources, develop and justify your ideas, reflect on your progress and present your findings effectively. These skills can provide an excellent preparation for the independent study expected at university and in the workplace.

The EPQ is worth half an A-Level and carries UCAS points, making it a valuable addition to your Level 3 studies. Many universities recognise the skills and commitment demonstrated through completing an EPQ, and some may take it into consideration when making offers to applicants. It is particularly valuable for students who want to demonstrate their ability to pursue an area of personal academic interest beyond the taught curriculum.

The EPQ journey starts in September of Year 12 and completed by the following May.
