Why study criminology
Criminology explores the types of crime that take place within our society and examines the complex reasons behind criminal behaviour. Throughout the course, students will explore real-life cases and develop an understanding of the criminal justice system, from the initial crime scene through to the courtroom.
As an Applied General qualification, Criminology combines academic study with practical, real-world application. Students will develop valuable skills in research, analysis, critical thinking, evaluation and communication, while learning to interpret evidence and consider different perspectives on complex social issues. The use of real-life cases encourages students to question information, form reasoned judgements and apply criminological theories to situations outside the classroom.
The skills developed can also support progression into a wide range of careers, including policing, criminal justice, probation, youth justice, forensic services and more. Students who have studied Criminology have also successfully gained places on degree apprenticeship routes with Staffordshire and West Midlands Police, providing an exciting opportunity to combine higher-level study with valuable experience in the workplace.
