Music (BTEC)

Welcome to the Key Stage 5 page for the Music Department here at Kingsmead!

Music at Kingsmead really is something you must see and hear first-hand! Our dedicated music rooms allow our students to study a wide-ranging, challenging and engaging course that will develop their performance skills as a soloist and as part of an ensemble. The course will also develop students’ knowledge of music theory and will introduce the professional aspects of working within the music industry.

The course is made up of four individual units that cater for both the practical and theoretical aspects of Music. There will be opportunities to analyse music, to compose and to perform, along with theoretical tasks and event organisation. The units are as follows:

* Unit 1: Practical Music Theory & Harmony

* Unit 2: Professional Practice in the Music Industry

* Unit 3: Ensemble Performance

* Unit 6: Solo Performance

Lessons in BTEC Music are hugely varied with our time being split between both theoretical and practical activities. ICT and digital technology are also utilised for composition and coursework. Students are encouraged to practice their instrument and rehearse as much as possible in order to develop their skills, and some lessons are dedicated to this. Students are also expected to maximise their learning potential by conducting independent study, utilising their study periods in school and using the Music department outside of timetabled lessons.
